In the age of modern technology, is it a detriment to have instantaneous access to anything at anytime?

Modern technology has made it so that I would rather stay at home on my computer and call people than actually hang out with them. Email has made it so that I never bother sending anyone letters, ebay has made buying gifts less special because they're such a common commodity. I am probably in the minority, but new technology has made life more boring for me.
