Is this an effective way to study, or is it over-kill?

I think that is an effective way to study. It's good that you know what's important and are able to memorize even that much. College isn't easy and if you can only spend 6 hours on 4 chapters...that's great time you're making. I'd say that's not overkill that's really good.
