Victor Frankenstein's death?

Wasn't it the town's people that decided Dr. Frankenstein was the one responsible for the deaths that his monster caused, and so they executed him on the gallows? Or maybe they just had enough of his tinkering with human cadavers and illegally unearthing them from graves that set them off.
