Once you graduate you will be given a 6months grace period (if I'm not mistaken) for you to find a job, once you find a job or the period ends, it will start to build intrest. Try to pay the 1000 immediately upon graduating. Also you can try to send in a few payment while you are in school in order to receive a debt forgiveness (you won't have to pay anything else).
